Shade Balls

Our team, the Aqua Energizers is based on experimenting shade balls. Shade balls are  black round four inch balls and 96 million were dumped into the L.A resevior.  Shade balls are made  of black polyethylene, plastic, and carbon. It is coated with ultraviolet light and degradation. The balls are black to cool the water down and try to eliminate the frequent droughts happening in L.A. They dropped 96 million of these balls in the Los Angeles reservior covering only half of the resevior. As you might know, L.A is facing huge drought difficulties. Shade balls slows down the proccess of evaporation, prevents algae and bacteria from growing, and prevents chemial reactions that might become harmful to the environment. They dumped the shade balls in the reservior to help save drinking water. What we don't know is if the people in charge of monitoring the reservoir are keeping track of what's going on on under the water. We assumed that all the living organisms under the water were dying because the reservoir is getting no sunlight due to the shade balls intentionally blocking the light out.

We are imitated what the covered part of the reservior would be like by using two tanks. Both tanks are fully polluted with java moss, duck weed, algae, dirt, duck feces, and fish food. The temperature is also being controlled so we can accurately replicate every element that can be found in the reservoir. We've tested both tanks and everyday we looked at the phosphate, nitrite, nitrate, and dissloved oxygen. Right now both of the tanks are the same but we plan to do more.
